Public Health

The term for a ‘neighborhood’ here in the Philippines is a barangay.  A good place to start looking for lenders is the Barangay Hall, a collection of buildings than usually includes an office and a basketball court and lots of people with little to do and plenty of time to talk to researchers.  Today my translator and I visited the clinic in one of these Barangay Halls.  While she spoke to the nurses I looked at a map on the wall; it laid out the barangay and pinpointed areas with health concerns, with different colored dots identifying things like ‘malnourished children’ and ‘dengue fever’.  A light green dot, I was surprised to learn, indicated a lactating mother.
Irrelevant, but this is a strange tuna advertisement

My other interviews uncovered some really interesting stuff, but due to privacy restraints I can’t talk about it.  In case anyone is wondering about why my posts are so short, it’s because it would be a breach of confidentiality if I shared information about project design, interview results, or possible trends in the data.  Loose lips sink internships!

I can safely say that I got a haircut this afternoon, and that the hairdresser says I now look very handsome.

  1. Can we meet somewhere in a dark alley to discuss a little project the NSA has for you?
